A purpose-built racing car is not simply a valuable version of a street car. Front splitters, flat floors, diffusers, side skirts, stiff suspension and center-lock wheels can make ordinary carrier ramps unsuitable. Safe transportation begins with measurements and equipment selection—not with improvisation at pickup.

Measure more than ground clearance

The lowest stationary measurement is important, but it is only one part of loading geometry. Record clearance at the front splitter, side skirts, exhaust, flat floor, rear diffuser and any exposed aerodynamic components. Measure overall width, track width, wheelbase and tire width as well.

Approach angle, breakover angle and departure angle determine whether the car can transition onto a ramp without contact. A long front overhang can cause a splitter strike even when the center of the car appears to have adequate clearance. Share clear photographs from the front, rear and both sides with the coordinator.

Explain whether ride height can be raised using onboard air jacks, transport suspension settings or removable setup spacers. Never assume that a driver will know the car’s racing systems or be authorized to adjust them.

Choose equipment before assigning the carrier

Enclosed transport is commonly selected for race cars because it limits direct weather and road exposure and may provide specialized loading equipment. However, the word “enclosed” does not guarantee a hydraulic liftgate, extended race ramps, a winch or sufficient interior width. Equipment must be confirmed for the actual trailer.

A hydraulic liftgate can keep the car level while it is raised to trailer height, reducing ramp-angle transitions. Long race ramps or ramp extensions reduce the approach angle. A winch allows controlled movement without slipping the clutch, overheating a race transmission or requiring the engine to idle during loading.

Ask about trailer door width, liftgate dimensions, interior height, tie-down points and whether the operator has suitable soft straps. Extremely wide GT cars, prototypes and vehicles with large aero may require dimensions beyond those of a standard enclosed trailer.

Create a low-angle loading plan

The pickup site needs level, firm pavement and enough straight-line space for the transporter. Inclines, driveway crowns, curbs and uneven paddock surfaces can change the effective ramp angle and defeat otherwise suitable equipment.

Before moving the car, confirm that splitters, dive planes and removable extensions are secure. If the manufacturer or race team permits removal of vulnerable aero components, label and pack them separately. Do not remove structural or safety components merely to make loading easier.

Use a spotter who can watch the lowest points throughout the movement. Progress should be slow enough to stop before contact. Wood blocks or improvised short planks are not substitutes for correctly rated ramp equipment and a planned transition.

Secure the car without damaging racing hardware

Tie-down methods should match the vehicle and trailer. Soft wheel straps are often preferred because they avoid loading suspension or attaching to vulnerable chassis and aerodynamic components. But wheel design, brake ducts, tire warmers, center-lock hardware and carbon components can limit strap placement.

Do not attach straps to control arms, tow hooks, splitters, wings or chassis points unless the vehicle manufacturer or race engineer has identified them as approved transport locations. Suspension compression can also affect a car with very little static clearance.

Steering should be secured according to the carrier’s procedure, while any removable steering wheel should be handled as agreed. Loose tools, radios, data equipment and spare parts must be removed or separately secured.

Prepare the race car and its documentation

Provide starting instructions, master-switch location, fuel-system procedure, alarm or immobilizer information and any sequence required for gearbox or neutral operation. If the car cannot be started safely outside a racing environment, arrange winch loading and clearly label the controls.

Document bodywork, wheels, glass, splitter edges, diffuser, undertray and interior before pickup. Low cars can sustain damage underneath that is difficult to see in ordinary exterior photographs, so include low-angle images when safely possible.

Disclose fluid leaks, battery isolation requirements, fuel-cell condition and whether fire-suppression systems are armed. Transport personnel should not operate unfamiliar racing systems without instructions.

Plan unloading as carefully as loading

The destination must offer compatible space and surface conditions. Equipment that solves pickup also has to work at delivery. Confirm who will receive the car and whether that person understands the starting, steering and braking procedures.

Inspect the vehicle before it leaves the loading area. Compare the splitter, floor edges, wheels, body panels and rear diffuser with pickup photographs and the bill of lading. Record concerns on the delivery paperwork according to the applicable procedure.

Race-car transportation is successful when everyone knows the dimensions, equipment and handling plan before the truck arrives. Accurate disclosure is more valuable than a last-minute attempt to make an unsuitable trailer work.
